It is a natural port, isolated of the swell of the Cantabrian sea, and connected to this by a narrow natural channel. Ulia and Jaizkibel mountains protect the river located on both sides of the entrance of the port.

There are two lighthouses indicating the exit to the Cantabrian sea in the Port of Pasaia: the Plata Lighthouse located in the western part of the entrance of the port, in the mount Ulia, and the Senokozulua, in the eastern part of the entrance of the port to sea.
